V-Healthy family classes have been designed to help families become more active and to fight the childhood obesity epidemic that is sweeping across the nation. Parents and children can exercise together, encouraging each other. Not only will the child become more active, but the parent too can benefit from a great workout.

A family class has activities for everyone to enjoy. Classes can include the following:

  • Dance e.g. cheer leading & hula hooping
  • Sports e.g. badminton, netball
  • Games e.g. bench ball
  • Nutritional games & quizzes to help educate families in a fun and exciting way

Why should I go to a family class?

Despite the well publicised child obesity epidemic, an overwhelming four out of five (79%) parents are unconcerned about their child getting enough exercise. Research shows that parents should be worried as only a quarter (23%) of children are doing the recommended amount of exercise (one hour/day).

More than a third of young people (35%) said their parents could persuade them to do more exercise and 9% said the main reason why they are physically active now is because they are told to exercise by their parents. It has been identified that having a healthy and active life with parents and other family members motivated children to be active. It also found that a lack of parental and family support lead to their children being inactive.

Early activity experience is essential for developing a positive attitude to activity, exercise and sport. An active lifestyle should be encouraged in early childhood and carried on throughout adolescence and in to adulthood. There is firm evidence that an active lifestyle in adulthood has direct benefits on health.

To get children involved in physical activity, parents need to take responsibility to ensure that their children become more physically active. They can do this by being supportive, encouraging and offering practical support.
