DIET

Diets and diet products are a multi-billion pound selling industry, however only 1 in every 100 people who go on a diet succeed in shedding weight permanently. Many people think that “diets work” for them, but when asked how long they have been on the diet, they often say X number of months ‘this time’, and that they have lost X amount of weight ‘this time’.

So why do so many people spend so much money on diets when they only see short term results?!

The media has a lot to answer for, telling us that we should be thin and persuading us to buy in to things without thinking about the consequences. Everyone knows that to lose weight you have to eat healthily & exercise, however we live in a world that wants results NOW – they want to lose weight NOW and tone up NOW. When people fall for the latest diet, they are putting their health at risk because most people can not stick to a diet, and when they quit the diet they put the weight back on that they lost from the diet and much more. They then go back on the diet because they know that they can lose weight from it and the viscous cycle continues…

The reason why diets do not work is because people have different energy needs depending on their energy output (how much exercise they do, their basal metabolic rate, digestion and absorption). To lose weight, maintain your weight, or put on weight you need to look at your energy input (calories consumed) and your energy output (calories burnt).

  • If your energy output is higher than your energy input you will lose weight.
  • If your energy output is lower than your energy input you will put on weight.
  • If your energy output is the same as your energy input your weight will remain the same.
