Children’s health is an increasingly important topic. The current health status of many children in the UK is at risk as a result of leisure pursuits e.g. watching TV, computer games and computer use resulting in low physical activity levels. To be considered healthy, children should do 60 minutes of moderate activity every day (equivalent to a brisk walk). However, only a quarter (23%) of children admit to doing the recommended amount of activity every day. If we carry on the way we are, 90% of today’s children could be overweight or obese by 2050.

Exercise can benefit children in many ways including the following:

  • It can make them feel happier, more confident & have a better outlook on life
  • It provides opportunities for social interaction, achievement and well being
  • It can lower their blood pressure & reduce the chance of children developing diseases in later life, e.g. heart disease.
  • It will strengthen their bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis later in life
  • It will give them a leaner body & control their body fat and become less likely to be overweight
  • They will have a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  • Active children may be less likely to smoke, drink alcohol or use illegal drugs
  • There is some evidence that indicates physical activity in childhood may be related to general cognitive function and academic achievement in school
  • Improved alertness and concentration
  • Growing pains may not be as prominent and there will be an increase in muscle strength

At V-Healthy we recognise the importance of introducing activities to children at a young age which they enjoy so that they are not put off exercise and so that they are more likely to carry it on throughout life.
